From 2018 to 2021, the aubergine market volume in CIS increased from 322.8 thousand tons to 515.5 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by the expansion of greenhouse complexes in Russia, such as the 'Yuzhny' and 'Moskovsky' agrokombinats, which increased cultivated area and yield. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused logistical constraints, reducing imports and stimulating further growth in domestic production to meet demand.

In 2022, production slightly declined to 484.9 thousand tons due to geopolitical factors that disrupted logistics and supply chains. However, market volume continued to rise, reaching 525.7 thousand tons, as imports increased to 42.5 thousand tons. In 2023, production recovered to 509.9 thousand tons thanks to further expansion of greenhouse areas, lifting market volume to 552.2 thousand tons.

In 2024, aubergine imports grew to 47.6 thousand tons, with increased supplies from Middle Eastern countries to compensate for seasonal fluctuations, while consumer preferences began shifting towards frozen aubergines due to storage convenience.

Aubergine production in the CIS has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 460.8 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 12.8% increase from 2019. Looking back to 2017, production has risen by 47.1% overall, which works out to an average annual growth rate of 13.7%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 305.7 thousand tonnes, when production fell by 2.4%. The biggest jump came in 2019, with a 33.7% surge.

The value of aubergine production in the CIS has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, output was worth 321.2 million US dollars, up 7.3% from the previous year. Since 2017, production value has grown by 32.5%, averaging 9.8% per year.

Aubergine exports from the CIS have fallen for the second year running. In 2020, exports totaled 7 290 tonnes, a sharp 11.7% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 30.5%, with an average annual decrease of 11.4%. The peak was in 2018 at 13 286 tonnes, which saw a 26.6% increase. The steepest fall occurred in 2019, with a 37.8% decline.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine was the top buyer of aubergines from the CIS, making up 21.6% of total exports by volume.

Aubergine exports from the CIS in value terms have decreased for the second straight year. In 2020, exports amounted to 5 081 thousand US dollars, down 16.0% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value fell by 37.4%, averaging a 14.5% annual decline. The highest value was in 2018 at 10 775 thousand US dollars, which represented a 32.7% increase. The largest drop was in 2019, with a 43.8% fall.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine was the leading destination for aubergine exports from the CIS in value terms, accounting for 7.1% of total flows.

Aubergine imports into the CIS have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 24 649 tonnes, a 17.5% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 8.6%, with an average annual drop of 3.0%. The highest volume was in 2018 at 30 305 tonnes, when imports rose by 12.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the import market for aubergines in the CIS was quite fragmented. Iran led with 16.3% of imports by volume, followed by Turkey at 13.8% and China at 12.5%. Together, these three countries accounted for just 42.6% of total imports, with no single nation holding a dominant share.

Aubergine imports into the CIS in value terms have dropped for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports were valued at 29 522 thousand US dollars, a dramatic 33.2% fall from 2019.
