The market for fresh or chilled aubergines in Senegal expanded initially, with volume rising from 4 209 t in 2018 to 4 376 t in 2019. This growth was driven by a targeted government policy to develop the horticulture sector, including the establishment of a Directorate of Horticulture and subsidies for storage and transportation equipment, which boosted production in the key Niayes region.

After 2019, the domestic market volume contracted, falling to 3 922 t by 2023. This decline coincided with a sharp increase in exports, which grew from 69 t in 2018 to 440 t in 2023, while local production remained stable around 4 300 t. Enhanced phytosanitary controls and monitoring of fruit and vegetable exports, as highlighted in later sector reports, facilitated this shift toward external markets.

By 2024, the horticulture sector experienced strengthened governance and digitalization of the supply chain, supported by a record subsidy budget for agricultural inputs. These measures contributed to an unprecedented overall horticulture output, reflecting continued state commitment to the sector's development.

In 2019, Senegal's aubergine production reached its peak at 4 406 tonnes. This was followed by a slight decline to 4 363 tonnes in 2020, representing a 1.0% decrease year-on-year.
