Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the domestic market volume for fresh carrots and turnips in Iran expanded significantly from 155.5 thousand tons to 239.5 thousand tons. This surge was primarily driven by the entry of new players into the fresh produce sector, which increased competitive pressure and supply availability. Concurrently, heightened investment from both state-owned and private companies into production and processing capacity, supported by favorable government policies for farmers, enabled a substantial rise in output, boosting the volume available for local consumption.

The market contracted to 214.9 thousand tons in 2020 as a sharp increase in exports coincided with the global COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted supply chains and altered consumer patterns towards online shopping and hygienic packaging. The following year, the market recovered to 236.6 thousand tons. This rebound was supported by changes in packaging and labeling regulations to meet international standards, which temporarily affected export flows, while sustained domestic consumer interest in healthy and organic produce helped maintain internal demand.

In 2022, shifts in export policy and new restrictions on target markets due to international sanctions encouraged higher overseas shipments, which contributed to a reduction in domestic market volume to 223.0 thousand tons despite growing production. By 2023, the market volume showed signs of stabilization, settling at 222.0 thousand tons as production and export levels reached a new equilibrium.
