Bangladesh's aubergine production grew steadily from 516 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 681 thousand tonnes in 2023. This expansion was primarily driven by the adoption of genetically modified Bt aubergines starting in the 2020/21 season, when over 65,000 farmers began cultivating these varieties. The Bt technology provided higher yields and reduced insecticide use, enabling a significant increase in output.

The market was further supported by rising demand for processed vegetables, as the frozen and ready-to-cook food segment had been growing at an annual rate of 15% in preceding years. Additionally, aubergine exports from Bangladesh saw notable growth in 2022, enhancing market access and contributing to overall production volumes.

In 2024, high food inflation and increased prices for fresh vegetables led to a contraction in the aubergine market, ending the multi-year growth trend. This was compounded by broader economic measures, such as the government's waiver of customs duties on rice imports, which affected general food market conditions.
