Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh apples, pears and quinces in the CIS began the period at 7 004 тыс. т in 2018, supported by state programs for horticulture development and the introduction of modern storage technologies. In 2019, market volume fell to 6 417 тыс. т, primarily due to tightened phytosanitary controls and customs procedures for imported fruit, which restricted supply, despite the entry of new players including large agriholdings. By 2020, the market stabilized at 6 454 тыс. т as expansion of orchard areas and adoption of controlled-atmosphere storage helped boost domestic production.

Growth resumed in 2021, with the market reaching 6 668 тыс. т, driven by continued state support for production and logistics disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic that curtailed imports. The market remained steady at 6 715 тыс. т in 2022, as tightening sanctions on imports and increased investment in domestic processing and production altered the supply structure in favor of local output.

A contraction to 6 384 тыс. т occurred in 2023, coinciding with a 4% reduction in orchard area and ongoing strict import oversight by regulatory bodies. Into 2024, the trend of shrinking orchard area continued, while stricter labeling, packaging and traceability requirements further shaped market operations.
