The market volume for fresh peaches and nectarines in the CIS grew from 559 thousand tons in 2018 to 592 thousand tons in 2019. This upward trend was interrupted in 2020 when the market declined to 579 thousand tons, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which slowed consumption and disrupted supply chains.

Recovery began in 2021, with the market reaching 591 thousand tons, supported by the expansion of e-commerce and state intervention purchases that maintained demand and production. A significant surge followed in 2022, pushing the market to 666 thousand tons, driven by government measures to support domestic production, which boosted output. Growth continued to 711 thousand tons in 2023, aided by the adoption of new packaging technologies that improved product shelf life and sustained consumer interest in organic produce.

In 2020, the CIS produced 372.9 thousand tonnes of peaches and nectarines, marking a 3.2% decline from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 3.1%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 1.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 346.4 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 385.2 thousand tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2018 with a 10.0% decrease, whereas the largest increase was in 2019 with an 11.2% rise.

Following two years of growth, shipments of peaches and nectarines from the CIS to international markets declined. In 2020, the CIS exported 24.4 thousand tonnes, representing a sharp 55.8% decrease compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 40.4%, averaging an annual decline of 15.9%. The peak export volume was in 2019 at 55.3 thousand tonnes, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 26.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ukraine was the primary destination for CIS exports of peaches and nectarines in volume terms, accounting for 1.9% of total flows.

In 2020, the value of peaches and nectarines exports from the CIS reached 94.7 million US dollars, showing a 39.6% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, export value grew by 91%, with an average annual growth rate of 24.1%. The largest decline was in 2019 at 4.5%, while the most significant increase was in 2018 at 43.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine and Oman were the two main destinations for CIS exports in value terms, with Ukraine accounting for 1.3% and Oman for 0.9% of total flows, together making up 2.2%.

Imports peaches and nectarines to CIS

Peaches and nectarines imports into the CIS declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 230.8 thousand tonnes, reflecting a substantial 11.8% drop compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 27.5%, averaging an annual reduction of 10.1%.

During 2017–2020, imports in volume terms were spread across numerous partner countries. Turkey, China, and Serbia were key sources, contributing 27.2%, 10.1%, and 6.4% of imports, respectively, which together accounted for 43.7% of total flows.

Peaches and nectarines imports into the CIS increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, import value amounted to 349.7 million US dollars, corresponding to a 7.8% rise from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, import value decreased by 9.7%, with an average annual decline of 3.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 315.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest drop of 18.6%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Turkey, China, and Serbia remained the top three markets for CIS imports in value terms, collectively accounting for 53.2% of total flows.
