The market for fresh apples, pears, and quinces in Croatia experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. Market volume began at 91 247 tons in 2018 but fell sharply to 50 219 tons in 2019, representing a decline of over 45%. This was followed by a partial recovery to 68 636 tons in 2020.

After 2020, the market contracted again over the next two years, reaching 51 562 tons in 2022, before rising to 66 845 tons in 2023. Domestic production followed a similar trajectory, decreasing from 93 310 tons in 2018 to a low of 48 620 tons in 2022, then rebounding to 62 190 tons in 2023, while import and export levels varied throughout the period.

Croatia's production of apples, pears, and quinces has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 67 570 tonnes, marking a 4.4% decrease from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 13.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.4%. The peak was in 2018, when output reached 93 310 tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a 24.3% decline, while the largest increase was also in 2018, at 57.0%.

Exports apples, pears and quinces from Croatia

In 2020, Croatia exported 18 104 tonnes of apples, pears, and quinces, which was 49.3% lower than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 41.1%, with an average annual decline of 16.2%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 35 676 tonnes, and the largest increase happened that same year, at 44.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the top buyers of Croatian apples, pears, and quinces were Austria, Slovenia, and Germany, accounting for 25.7%, 25.3%, and 11.2% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 62.3% of total exports.

In 2020, Croatia's exports of apples, pears, and quinces in value terms amounted to 7 161 thousand US dollars, down 22.2% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 35.7%, with an annualized rate of 13.7%. The largest decline was in 2018 at 26.5%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019, at 12.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the value of Croatia's exports of apples, pears, and quinces was spread across many partner countries. Slovenia, Italy, and Austria were the leading destinations, with shares of 19.3%, 16.1%, and 12.7% of exports in value, respectively. However, their combined share was only 48.1% of total flows, indicating a diverse export market.

After two years of decline, Croatia's imports of apples, pears, and quinces rose in 2020. Imports reached 19 170 tonnes, a sharp increase of 25.8% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 24.3%, with an average annual decline of 8.9%. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 15 235 tonnes, and the largest drop also occurred that year, at 32.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland, Italy, and Slovenia were the main sources for Croatia's imports of apples, pears, and quinces in kind, with shares of 31.7%, 23.7%, and 13.3%, respectively. Together, they accounted for 68.6% of total imports.
