The Czech fresh apple market volume exhibited considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. The market began the period at 155.6 thousand tons, fell sharply to 125.3 thousand tons in 2019, and then recovered strongly to 154.3 thousand tons in 2020. This pattern of swings continued with another decline to 129.3 thousand tons in 2021, a partial rebound to 136.5 thousand tons in 2022, and a final slight contraction to 130.1 thousand tons by the end of 2023.

These shifts in total market volume were closely mirrored by changes in domestic apple production, which itself varied significantly from over 150 thousand tons to under 100 thousand tons. The balance of trade also played a key role, with years of higher imports, such as 2020, contributing to market expansion, while lower import volumes coincided with market contractions in other years.

In 2019, Czechia produced 99.5 thousand tons of apples, which was the lowest level during the period. Production then surged by 43.9% in 2018 to reach 151.5 thousand tons, the highest value recorded. However, it dropped sharply by 34.3% in 2019 before rebounding in 2020 to 115.6 thousand tons, marking a significant 16.2% increase compared to the previous year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, apple production grew by 9.8%, averaging an annual growth rate of 3.2%.

In 2018, Czechia's apple exports peaked at 55 336 tons, reflecting a substantial 43.5% increase. However, they fell by 30.0% in 2019 before rising again in 2020 to 41 574 tons, which was 7.4% higher than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 7.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Austria, and Slovakia were consistently the main destinations for Czech apple exports in volume terms. Germany accounted for 42.8% of exports, Austria for 32.7%, and Slovakia for 17.4%. Together, these three countries represented 92.8% of total export flows.

After declining for two consecutive years, Czech apple exports in value terms rebounded in 2020. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 10 968 thousand US dollars, which represented a 20.5% drop. In 2020, export value rose sharply by 23.8% year-over-year to reach 13 579 thousand US dollars. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 17%, with an average annual decline of 6.0%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Slovakia, Germany, and Austria were the leading destinations for Czech apple exports in value terms. Slovakia accounted for 41.8% of exports, Germany for 31.1%, and Austria for 16.0%. Combined, these three countries made up 88.9% of total export value.

Czechia's apple imports in volume terms increased for the second year in a row in 2020. The lowest level was recorded in 2018 at 59 404 tons, which marked a 35.3% decline. In 2020, imports rose by 24.4% year-over-year to approximately 80 277 tons. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 12.6%, with an average annual decline of 4.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, Italy, and Slovakia remained the top suppliers of apples to Czechia in volume terms. Poland accounted for 42.9% of imports, Italy for 20.6%, and Slovakia for 12.5%. Together, these three countries represented 76.1% of total import volumes.
