Between 2018 and 2020, the Moroccan almond market underwent a significant transformation. The complete removal of customs barriers for U.S. almond imports in 2019 allowed American almonds to flood the market, increasing competition that initially contributed to a drop in domestic production and a fall in total market volume to 107 thousand tons in 2019. The situation reversed in 2020 when these surging imports, which captured 83% of the market, combined with lower global almond prices during the COVID-19 pandemic, drove the market volume up sharply to 150 thousand tons.

From 2021 to 2023, imported almonds continued to dominate. A 10-20% price decrease in 2021 further stimulated consumption, pushing the market volume to a peak of 196 thousand tons. The market stabilized near 197 thousand tons in 2022, but persistent drought conditions weakened local harvests. In 2023, despite import volumes reaching a new high of 30.4 thousand tons, a sharp contraction in domestic production led the total market volume to fall to 177 thousand tons.

In 2020, Morocco produced 134.4 thousand tons of almonds, representing a 31.6% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 15%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 102.2 thousand tons, which marked the largest decline of 12.9%.

In 2020, Morocco's almond output was valued at 822.3 million US dollars, showing a sharp increase of 36.5% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value rose by 14.2%, corresponding to an annualized growth rate of 4.5%. The minimum value occurred in 2019 at 602.4 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 18.0%.

Morocco's almond export volumes increased for the second consecutive year, reaching 498 tons in 2020, a substantial gain of 10.6% over the prior year. However, from 2017 to 2020, exports overall decreased by 15.9%, with an annualized decline rate of 5.6%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 358 tons, which experienced the largest drop of 39.6%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 25.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark were the primary buyers of Moroccan almonds, accounting for 86.0% of total exports in volume. Germany led with 48.3%, followed by the Netherlands at 21.9%, and Denmark at 15.8%.

Morocco's almond export value increased for the second year in a row, totaling 3 045 thousand US dollars in 2020, a strong rise of 14.8% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, export value fell by 16.5%, with a compound annual decline rate of 5.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 2 242 thousand US dollars, which had the largest decrease of 38.5%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 18.4%.
