The almond market in South America expanded substantially from 2018 to 2021, with volume rising from 46 530 tons to a peak of 62 795 tons. This growth was particularly sharp in 2020, when the market jumped by over 12 000 tons or 24% compared to the previous year.

After reaching its high point in 2021, the market experienced a moderate contraction in the following two years, declining to 60 920 tons in 2022 and further to 59 196 tons in 2023. Despite these decreases, the 2023 market size remained well above the levels seen at the start of the period.

Almond production in South America has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, South America produced 45 955 tonnes of almonds, which is 6.2% higher than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 23.2%, representing an annualized growth rate of 7.2%.

Exports almonds from South America

Exports in kind, t

Almond exports from South America declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 2 173 tonnes, a decrease of 59.2% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 64.3%, with an annualized decline rate of 29.0%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 8 077 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 32.8%.

Data from 2017 to 2020 show that almond exports from South America were not concentrated on a few key destinations. Russia accounted for 22.9% of exports in kind, Italy for 5.1%, and Germany for 1.8%, with these three countries together representing only 29.8% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

After two years of growth, almond deliveries from South America declined. In 2020, South America exported almonds worth 43.3 million US dollars, a drop of 42.0% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 2.4%, with an annualized growth rate of 0.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 74.6 million US dollars, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 38.3%.

The structure of almond exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 indicates a diversified set of trading partners. Russia accounted for 22.9% of exports in value terms, Italy for 5.0%, and Germany for 2.3%, with these three countries jointly representing only 30.2% of total flows. The remaining 69.8% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

Imports almonds to South America

After two years of contraction, South America's almond import volume increased. In 2020, South America imported a total of 18 644 tonnes of almonds, marking a steep rise of 51.0% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 33.7%, with an annualized growth rate of 10.2%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 12 346 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 6.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Australia, and Spain remained the principal suppliers of almonds to South America. The United States accounted for 63.3% of imports in kind, Australia for 2.2%, and Spain for 0.6%, with these three countries together representing 66.1% of total imports in kind.

South America imported almonds worth 110.7 million US dollars in 2020, which is 23.1% higher than the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 24%, with an annualized growth rate of 7.4%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 6.4%.
