Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, frozen sweetcorn production in Mexico fluctuated, starting at 22 373 tons in 2018 and dipping to 20 523 tons in 2019 before recovering to 21 389 tons in 2020. The market volume fell from 29 708 tons to 25 880 tons over this period, partly due to the onset of exports in 2020, which reached 1 855 tons and were highlighted by Guanajuato's role as a key exporting region.

Between 2021 and 2023, production continued to expand, reaching 24 244 tons by 2023. The market volume rebounded to 29 806 tons in 2022 but then declined to 27 934 tons in 2023. This volatility was driven by multiple factors: the Russia-Ukraine war disrupted global corn supplies in 2022, prompting increased imports and supporting local output, while in 2023, government measures to restrict genetically modified corn imports, including new tariffs, reduced inbound shipments and contributed to the market contraction.

In the later years, import and export flows remained active, with imports reaching 10 744 tons and exports at 2 348 tons in 2024. Regulatory developments, such as the Law for the Promotion and Protection of Native Corn, alongside sustained guaranteed price programs, continued to influence the market structure and trade dynamics.
