Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for alliaceous vegetables in Oceania contracted from 408.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 325.6 thousand tons in 2021. This decline coincided with a period of rising vegetable prices, which heightened food inflation and reduced consumer demand. In 2020, fruit and vegetable prices increased by almost 9%, contributing to overall food price inflation of 2.9% in New Zealand. The trend continued in 2021 with a sharp rise in vegetable prices, the largest in over four years, which pushed food prices up by 1.4% and further constrained market consumption.

Market volume rebounded to 396.1 thousand tons in 2022, even as annual food prices rose 6.8% in New Zealand, driven by fruit and vegetable cost increases. By 2023, the volume had decreased again to 359.1 thousand tons, while domestic production continued its downward trend from earlier years.

In 2024, several regulatory changes were introduced that affect the market's operating environment. Australia implemented new food safety standards for fresh produce, including requirements for growers' food safety management, traceability, and licensing. New Zealand issued the Commodity Levies (Fresh Vegetables) Order 2024, regulating levies on fresh vegetables, and updated food importer requirements under the Food Act 2014. These measures aim to strengthen safety controls and market access rules for the industry.
