European wood pellet market volume expanded from 28 868 thousand tons in 2018 to 33 009 thousand tons in 2019, supported by rising demand for renewable energy and emission reduction policies across the region. The market then contracted to 30 088 thousand tons in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted production at key plants and global supply chains.

Market volume rebounded sharply to 35 464 thousand tons in 2021, fueled by strengthened climate policies and technological innovations improving pellet quality. In 2022, volume stabilized at 34 724 thousand tons, underpinned by EU directives promoting bioenergy and significant investments in new pellet production capacity across Europe.

In 2023, market volume decreased to 32 568 thousand tons. During this period, several countries such as Germany introduced policy incentives to replace old heating systems with pellet boilers, supporting sustained demand. By 2024, a logging moratorium in Poland led to raw material shortages and price increases, prompting producers to shift toward alternative feedstocks like agricultural residues.

Wood pellet production in Europe has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Europe produced 23 236 thousand tonnes of wood pellets, marking a 0.8% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 22.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.0%.

After two years of growth, Europe's wood pellet production value declined. In 2020, the output was valued at 5 446 million US dollars, representing a 3.8% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 33.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 10.1%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 5 660 million US dollars, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 33.8%.

Exports wood pellets from Europe

Wood pellet export volumes from Europe have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 10 596 thousand tonnes, up by 9.9% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 44.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 13.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, South Korea and Switzerland consistently remained the primary markets for wood pellet exports in kind, together accounting for 1.6% of total export flows.

Europe's wood pellet export value has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Europe exported 2 483 million US dollars worth of wood pellets, showing a 4.9% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 57.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 16.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Switzerland and South Korea led as the top buyers of wood pellets from Europe in value terms, with a combined share of 1.5% of total exports.

Imports wood pellets to Europe

Imports in kind, K t

After two years of growth, Europe's wood pellet import volumes declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 17 447 thousand tonnes, which is 10.9% less than the year before. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 22.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 7.1%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 19 591 thousand tonnes, with the largest increase also occurring in 2019 at 20.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Canada, and Brazil continued to be the main suppliers of wood pellets to Europe in kind, with shares of 28.3%, 10.0%, and 1.3% of imports, respectively. Together, they formed 39.6% of total import volumes.

Wood pellet import values into Europe have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, import volume amounted to 3 842 million US dollars, up by 1.1% year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 42%, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Canada, and Brazil remained the leading sources in the country structure of wood pellet imports in value terms, with shares of 35.0%, 8.8%, and 1.3%, respectively. Their combined share accounted for 45.1% of total import flows.
