Africa's production of wood in the rough grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 513.4 million tonnes, marking a 0.8% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 2.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.9%.

In 2020, the value of wood in the rough production in Africa was 126.8 billion US dollars, showing a slight decline of 5.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 11.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 108.7 billion US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2019 at 134.5 billion US dollars, representing the largest annual increase of 23.8%.

Exports wood in the rough from Africa

In 2020, Africa exported 2 653 thousand tonnes of wood in the rough, a modest increase of 4.2% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 11.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.7%. The largest decline was in 2019 at 0.0%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 6.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, China, Vietnam, and India remained the top buyers of wood in the rough from Africa. China accounted for 54.7% of exports in kind, Vietnam for 19.6%, and India for 4.1%, together making up 78.4% of total exports.

After two years of growth, Africa's wood in the rough exports declined in 2020. The export value was 655.4 million US dollars, down 2.5% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 21.2%, with an average annual rate of 6.6%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 672.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 22.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Vietnam, and India formed the core markets for Africa's wood in the rough exports in value terms. China held 59.7% of the export value, Vietnam 19.4%, and India 4.4%, collectively representing 83.4% of total flows.

Africa's imports of wood in the rough fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 343 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 12.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports dropped by 50.4%, with a compound annual decline rate of 20.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports in kind were distributed across various countries, with no single partner dominating. Finland accounted for 23.4% of imports, France for 10.7%, and Belgium for 6.7%, together making up 40.9% of total flows.

Africa's imports of wood in the rough declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the import value was 118.3 million US dollars, an 8.1% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 11.5%, with a compound annual decline rate of 4.0%. The highest value was in 2018 at 224.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 67.6%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 42.5%.
