Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the African wood in the rough market volume grew steadily from 503.8 million tonnes to 527.0 million tonnes. The initial increase coincided with broader economic growth projections for the continent, which likely bolstered demand for wood in construction and industrial applications.

The expansion continued through 2022, a year marked by significant regulatory developments such as The Gambia's Forest Act prohibiting the felling and export of specific species and the TraCer certification system in Gabon's Nkok Special Economic Zone. These measures aimed at ensuring legal and sustainable forestry practices, potentially supporting a more structured and reliable supply for the market.

By 2024, industry activity highlighted further maturation, with PG Bison commissioning a new medium-density fibreboard production line in South Africa and African Biomass Company advancing wood-based biomass products. These developments point to ongoing investments in processing capacity and product diversification within the sector.
