The African fibreboard market volume fluctuated between 2.2 million m³ and 2.8 million m³ from 2018 to 2023. After a contraction to 2.2 million m³ in 2019, the market recovered and grew steadily, reaching 2.8 million m³ by 2023. Domestic production, which had been stable at 580 thousand m³ from 2018 through 2020, rose sharply to 702 thousand m³ in 2021 and further to 904 thousand m³ in 2022, before moderating to 753 thousand m³ in 2023.

Major investments in production capacity were pivotal during this period. The growth in output in 2021 coincided with the start of site preparation for PG Bison's MDF (medium-density fibreboard) expansion project in Mkhondo, Southern Africa. In 2023, the construction and installation phase of the company's new MDF Contiroll line began, a period which aligned with a temporary dip in production. This multi-year expansion initiative was strategically aimed at addressing supply constraints and localizing fibreboard production for the regional market.

In 2019, Africa produced 579.6 thousand cubic meters of fiberboard, which remained unchanged in 2020. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 579.6 thousand cubic meters. The largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 1.8%, while the largest decline was in 2019, showing no change.

In 2020, Africa exported 110 thousand cubic meters of fiberboard, marking a significant 23.5% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 33.9%, averaging an annual decline of 12.9%. The largest drop was in 2018, down 30.2%, while the biggest increase was in 2019, up 23.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy and Australia were the top destinations for Africa's fiberboard exports in volume, together accounting for 13.7% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

Africa's fiberboard export value declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 38.7 million US dollars, a modest 5.4% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 7.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. The peak was in 2018 at 44.8 million US dollars, with the largest increase that year at 24.0% and the biggest decline in 2019 at 8.7%.

The market showed an unstable trend during this period. Import volumes peaked in 2017 and hit their lowest point in 2019, with a 6.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Africa's fiberboard imports reached 1 822 thousand cubic meters, up 3.2% from 2019. The minimum volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 765 thousand cubic meters, with the largest decline in 2018 at 83.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, India (55.1% of import volume), China (15.4%), and Turkey (6.4%) consistently led as the main sources of fiberboard imports to Africa, together making up 77.0% of total import flows.

In 2020, Africa's fiberboard import value was 550.6 million US dollars, showing a gradual 5.6% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value rose by 17.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.4%. The largest decline was in 2019 at 2.4%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 13.8%.
