The Greek market for wood in the rough contracted significantly from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling from 958 thousand tonnes to 741 thousand tonnes. After an initial drop in 2019, the market briefly stabilized around 900 thousand tonnes in 2020-2021 before a steep decline of over 140 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022.

This downward trajectory was driven by a substantial reduction in domestic production, which decreased by more than 200 thousand tonnes over the period. While import volumes showed some volatility, they were insufficient to offset the falling output, and a notable rise in exports after 2021 further reduced the supply available on the domestic market.

In 2020, Greece produced 883 K t of wood in the rough, showing negligible year-over-year variation. Production decreased by 16.9% between 2017 and 2020, which translates to an annualized decline of 6.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 883 K t, while the largest single-year decline occurred in 2018 at 11.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Albania and Bulgaria were the key destinations for Greece's wood in the rough exports, jointly accounting for 84.7% of total export flows. Other trading partners individually played much smaller roles during this period.

The export market for wood in the rough exhibited an unstable trend throughout the analyzed period. Export volumes reached their peak in 2019 and hit their lowest point in 2017, with a 4.5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Greece's wood in the rough exports amounted to 1 157 K $ US, marking a 60.5% decrease from 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 2 927 K $ US, which also saw the largest annual increase of 191.4%.

During 2017-2020, Germany (33.3% of export value), Bulgaria (22.3% of export value), and Albania (19.2% of export value) formed the core of Greece's wood in the rough exports in monetary terms. Together, these three countries accounted for 74.8% of total export flows.
