Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, production of coniferous wood fuel in Africa increased from 18 381 thousand cubic meters to 19 247 thousand cubic meters. This growth was primarily sustained by high demand in rural households, where limited access to electricity and prohibitive electricity costs maintained reliance on fuelwood. In South Africa's Limpopo Province, 40% of households used fuelwood for cooking in 2018, and by 2021, over 75% of rural households in the country still depended on solid fuels like firewood for their domestic energy needs.

Production continued its upward trajectory, reaching 19 551 thousand cubic meters by 2023. The market in 2022 was indirectly influenced by global supply chain disruptions and price increases for hardwood fiber following the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In 2023, growth was further supported by rising commercial interest in biomass and wood waste for energy, with companies such as Oricol promoting wood fuel chips as a cost-effective and carbon tax-exempt alternative to coal.

Factors in 2024 included a growing emphasis on sustainable forestry practices and timber traceability systems, exemplified by Gabon's mandatory traceability program, alongside investments in wood processing infrastructure like PG Bison's new medium-density fibreboard line, reflecting ongoing sector development.
