The wood fuel market in Turkey began the period at a high volume of 8.8 million m³ in 2018. This level coincided with a legislative amendment to the Forest Law that year, which granted authority to remove forest areas from protected status, potentially increasing the supply of wood available for fuel.

Market volume then entered a sustained decline, reaching a low of 4.5 million m³ in 2021. A recovery followed, with volume rising to 6.2 million m³ in 2022 and further to 6.6 million m³ in 2023, a period marked by a notable increase in import volumes.

By 2024, new regulatory measures came into effect, including government tenders for the procurement and distribution of wood pellet fuel and granting forest regional directorates the authority to sell firewood, aimed at supporting the use of wood as a renewable energy source.

Turkey's wood fuel production volume declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 5 750 K m³. However, in 2020, it fell to 5 397 K m³, representing a 6.1% year-over-year decrease. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018, with a growth rate of 6.5%.

Turkey's wood fuel production value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2018, it hit its lowest point at 917 M $ US, following a significant decline of 17.0% that year. The value then rebounded in 2019 with an 11.2% increase. In 2020, production was valued at 1 101 M $ US, marking a modest 8.0% rise compared to the previous year.

Exports wood fuel to Turkey

Wood fuel exports from Turkey increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 49 K m³, up 7.6% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 181.1%, which translates to an annualized rate of 41.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Turkey's wood fuel exports in volume terms were Cyprus, accounting for 20.7% of exports, Italy with 19.1%, and Bulgaria at 14.9%. Together, these three markets represented 54.6% of total export flows.

Turkey's wood fuel export value rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 10.1 M $ US, showing a 23.8% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value surged by 177.4%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 40.5%.

During 2017–2020, Turkey's wood fuel exports in value terms were distributed across numerous markets. The top three destinations—Israel, Cyprus, and Italy—collectively accounted for only 38.5% of total export value, indicating a diverse market presence.

Wood fuel imports into Turkey declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports were 598 K m³, down 14.1% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 82.2%, corresponding to an annualized decline rate of 43.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United States was the leading source of wood fuel imports to Turkey in volume terms, contributing 47.9% of imports. Ukraine followed with 20.8%, and Canada with 8.8%. Together, these three countries made up 77.5% of total import flows.

Turkey's wood fuel import value fell for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 1 101 M $ US, reflecting a sharp 18.1% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, import value decreased by 75.2%, which equates to an annualized decline of 37.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States dominated Turkey's wood fuel imports in value terms, accounting for 37.2% of the total. Ukraine contributed 17.9%, and Canada 7.1%. Combined, these three countries represented 62.2% of import flows.
