The wood fuel market in Kazakhstan expanded from 238 thousand m³ in 2018 to 332 thousand m³ in 2020, driven by rising demand for environmentally friendly heating sources. This growth was supported by the country's sustainability trends and tightening ecological standards, which increased the appeal of wood fuel as a compliant alternative to more polluting fuels.

Market volume then contracted to 190 thousand m³ in 2022. The decline began in 2021 when COVID-19 pandemic disruptions strained supply chains for wood fuel. The following year, the introduction of stricter labeling and certification requirements for wood fuel temporarily constrained market supply, even as new players focused on eco-friendly production entered the market.

By 2023, the market recovered to 212 thousand m³. This rebound coincided with domestic discussions about fuel shortages and a drop in coal mining, which made wood fuel more attractive for heating. Into 2024, broader fuel market regulations, including bans on exports of certain petroleum products, alongside ongoing environmental emphasis, continued to shape the operating environment for wood fuel.

Wood fuel production in Kazakhstan has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 303.0 K m³ of wood fuel, marking a 30.0% gain compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 25.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 211.0 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 12.4%.

Foreign wood fuel supplies from Kazakhstan have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 104 m³, reflecting a modest 3.0% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 340.1%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 63.9%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Kyrgyzstan and Russia clearly dominated Kazakhstan's wood fuel exports in kind, jointly accounting for 99.1% of total flows, while other countries held much smaller shares.

Kazakhstan's wood fuel exports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 46 K $ US, corresponding to a 64.0% increase over the past year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 296.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 58.2%.

In 2017–2020, Kyrgyzstan and Russia remained the main buyers of wood fuel from Kazakhstan, with their joint share amounting to 99.8% of total exports in value terms.

In 2020, Kazakhstan's wood fuel import volume amounted to 29 193 m³, showing a sharp decline of 25.2% versus the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 2.1%, equating to an annualized rate of 0.7%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 27 015 m³, while the highest was in 2019 at 39 052 m³, which also saw the largest increase of 44.6%.

There were noticeable fluctuations in market performance during the period. Imports peaked in 2019 at 6 295 K $ US and fell to a low of 1 937 K $ US in 2020, representing a 3.3-fold difference. In 2020, Kazakhstan imported 1 937 K $ US of wood fuel, marking a sharp year-on-year fall of 69.2%. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 9.6%.
