Earlier Report Observations

The wine market in Paraguay, measured by volume, stood at 43 781 t in 2018 but declined to 41 999 t in 2019 and further to 38 960 t in 2020. This contraction was driven by the persistent inflow of illicit alcohol, estimated to capture 30-40% of the total alcohol market, which reduced legal sales. External economic factors such as a stronger US dollar and global inflation also raised the cost of imported wine, dampening volumes. Despite these pressures, the market diversified with the launch of premium Paraguayan wines by Bodega Giacometti in 2019 and the entry of Bebidas del Paraguay SA in 2020, which added mid-range international brands like Finca La Celia and Misiones de Rengo to its portfolio.

Market volume recovered to 43 870 t in 2021 before falling to 40 315 t in 2022 and sharply to 29 230 t in 2023. The premium segment became more competitive, with Wines and Spirits strengthening its market position through focused sales culture, while the economical table wine segment remained significant. Illicit consumption continued to constrain legal market growth. In 2023, dollar appreciation and global inflation increased costs, contributing to a drop in imports and overall volume. Uruguayan wine producers intensified promotional activities in Paraguay during this period. The Spanish company Focasa confirmed its market entry in 2024 with a US$1 million investment, indicating new player interest for the coming years.
