The market for vermouth and flavoured wine in Moldova expanded rapidly between 2018 and 2020, with volume rising from 2.7 million liters to 5.7 million liters. This growth was fueled by the launch of new products, including vermouths from top wineries such as Carpe Diem and the entry of new players like Vinăria Pripa, alongside sustained promotion through the National Wine Day event which involved around 60 local producers.

After peaking in 2020, market volume declined over the next two years, falling to 3.0 million liters in 2022.

A rebound occurred in 2023, as production increased to 5.4 million liters and market volume recovered to 3.7 million liters. This turnaround was supported by an 18% rise in export volumes, driven by stronger international recognition, and by increased government subsidies for vineyard planting that stimulated output. Regulatory adjustments to align with European Union standards also enhanced competitiveness. By 2024, the focus on external markets led Moldova to become the world's sixth-largest vermouth exporter, with the United States absorbing 99% of its vermouth shipments.

Moldova's production of vermouth and other flavoured wine grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 5 812 K l, marking a significant increase of 41.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 89.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 23.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 808 K l, which also saw the largest decline of 8.5%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase at 46.2%.

Moldova's vermouth and other flavoured wine production increased in value for the third consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 11 345 K $ US, showing a modest rise of 2.0% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 66.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 18.5%.

Exports vermouth and other flavoured wine from Moldova

Following a two-year decline, Moldova's export volume of vermouth and other flavoured wine rebounded. In 2020, the country exported 207.2 K l, representing a strong improvement of 24.4% compared to 2019. However, between 2017 and 2020, overall exports decreased by 42.2%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 16.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 166.6 K l, which also saw the largest decline of 33.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Kazakhstan, and Belarus remained the primary buyers of Moldova's vermouth and other flavoured wine in volume terms. The United States accounted for 38.0% of exports, Kazakhstan for 16.5%, and Belarus for 8.9%. Together, these three markets represented 63.4% of total export volume.

Moldova's export value of vermouth and other flavoured wine declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 404.4 K $ US, down by 10.3% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value fell by 49.2%, equating to an annualized decrease of 20.2%.

Throughout 2017-2020, the United States, Kazakhstan, and Belarus formed the core group of markets for Moldova's vermouth and other flavoured wine exports in value terms.
