Southern Asia's wheat gluten market volume showed variability from 2018 to 2023, beginning at 17 771 t and peaking at 22 875 t in 2022 after steady growth in 2021 and 2022. The market contracted slightly to 21 842 t in 2023, following the earlier expansion.

In 2024, policy adjustments in India, a major regional influence, came into effect. The government increased the wheat minimum support price by 6.6% and maintained a 40% import duty, measures designed to support domestic agriculture which may affect input costs and trade patterns for wheat gluten.

Concurrently, regulatory compliance was streamlined as only FSSAI certification became mandatory for food products. New wheat varieties entered cultivation, and updated labeling rules required clear allergen identification for gluten, while global dietary trends continued to shape product demand in the region.

Southern Asia's wheat gluten production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 20 122 tonnes of wheat gluten, marking a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 14.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.6%.

After a two-year decline, Southern Asia's wheat gluten production increased in value. In 2020, the output was valued at 21 249 thousand US dollars, up by 4.1% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, however, production value decreased by 23%, equating to an annualized decline of 8.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 20 420 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline of 19.4% also occurring that year.

Exports wheat gluten from Southern Asia

In 2020, foreign wheat gluten supplies from Southern Asia totalled 5 057 tonnes, representing a steep increase of 51.8% year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 39.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.7%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 332 tonnes, with the largest decline of 21.5% also occurring that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey remained the dominant destination for exports in kind, accounting for 76.5% of total flows, while the remainder was fragmented across other markets.

After a two-year decline, Southern Asia's wheat gluten exports increased in value. In 2020, export volume was recorded at 5 340 thousand US dollars, indicating a sharp increase of 51.3% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, however, exports decreased by 6.3%, equating to an annualized decline of 2.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 530 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline of 38.0% also occurring that year.
