Market volume grew from 14 488 t in 2018 to 16 054 t in 2019, then fell for two consecutive years to a low of 13 393 t in 2021. A strong rebound occurred in 2022, lifting volume to a peak of 16 368 t, before it declined again to 13 842 t in 2023.

The notable 22% surge in market volume to 16 368 t in 2022 took place against a backdrop of global wheat market turmoil. Key drivers were India's ban on wheat exports and the war in Ukraine, which constrained worldwide wheat supplies and increased international prices. These events prompted heightened import and production activity in Malaysia to ensure adequate stocks of wheat-derived products, including gluten, leading to the market expansion that year.

Malaysia's wheat gluten production declined for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 7 980 tonnes, marking a significant drop of 13.3% from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, production fell by 8.8%, averaging an annual decrease of 3.0%. The highest output was in 2019 at 10 697 tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 22.2%. The sharpest decline occurred in 2020, with a 14.0% reduction.

Following two years of decline, Malaysia's wheat gluten production value rose in 2021. Output was valued at 16 416 thousand US dollars, up 6.0% from 2020.
