Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Southern Asia increased from 12 318 thousand tons to 13 236 thousand tons. The accelerated growth in 2020 was supported by the expansion of India's packaged wheat flour market, fueled by population growth and rising disposable incomes, which raised demand for milling by-products. Concurrently, the government's PM FME scheme strengthened the wheat milling sector through the adoption of improved technology and product quality, boosting bran output.

Market growth moderated to 13 456 thousand tons in 2021, partly due to a slight decline in India's wheat flour production volumes, which constrained bran availability. However, the diversification of wheat bran protein use into animal feed and industrial applications helped sustain consumption. A sharp rise to 14 382 thousand tons occurred in 2022 as the continued emphasis under the PM FME scheme on mechanization and quality control enhanced milling efficiency, while consumer trends toward packaged and processed wheat products steadily increased demand for bran as a by-product.

The market volume reached 14 793 thousand tons by 2023, extending the upward trend. In 2024, the industry demonstrated investment in human capital and technology when the Indian Institute of Skill Development Training received an award for innovative courses in wheat milling skill development, highlighting ongoing efforts to refine bran production processes.
