The market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Thailand experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 438 thousand tonnes in 2019, the market volume declined for three consecutive years, falling to 225 thousand tonnes in 2022. This was followed by a sharp recovery in 2023, when the market expanded to 380 thousand tonnes.

The initial growth in 2019 was driven by a substantial increase in imports, which rose from 23 thousand tonnes to 110 thousand tonnes. Subsequently, the market contraction from 2020 to 2022 coincided with reductions in both domestic production and import volumes. Production fell from 329 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 225 thousand tonnes in 2022, while imports dropped to minimal levels.

The rebound in 2023 was primarily due to a recovery in production, which surged to 371 thousand tonnes. Imports also increased slightly, but remained modest compared to the peak in 2019. Exports, though starting in 2022, remained a minor factor throughout the period.

Thailand's production of wheat bran, sharps and residues reached its highest point in 2019 at 328.6 thousand tons. In 2020, production fell to 271.5 thousand tons, representing a 17.4% decline from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 15.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 5.5%. The largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2019, when production rose by 2.2%.

The export market for wheat bran, sharps and residues from Thailand showed significant volatility during the observed period. Export volumes peaked in 2017 and then fell to their lowest level in 2020, with the highest volume being 51 times greater than the lowest. In 2020, exports dropped dramatically to 0.0 thousand tons, a 91.8% decrease compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, when exports fell by 96.7%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2019 with a 628.0% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Laos was the primary destination for Thailand's wheat bran, sharps and residues exports, consistently accounting for 94.0% of total export volumes.

The value of Thailand's wheat bran, sharps and residues exports displayed an unstable trend over the timeframe. Export values reached their peak in 2017 and then fell to their lowest point in 2018, with the peak value being 25 times higher than the trough. In 2020, export values rose sharply to 3 thousand US dollars, a 435.4% increase compared to 2019. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 0.4 thousand US dollars, which also marked the largest decline of 96.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Laos and Maldives were the main buyers of wheat bran, sharps and residues from Thailand in value terms, together representing 86.9% of total export value. The remaining share was fragmented across other countries.

In 2020, imports amounted to 103.5 thousand tons, a gradual decrease of 5.6% from 2019. The maximum volume was recorded in 2019 at 109.7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest increase of 383.2%.
