The wheat bran market in Greece showed relative stability from 2018 to 2020, with annual volumes hovering around 215 thousand tons. This steady period was interrupted by a significant expansion phase beginning in 2021.

Market volume surged by over 9% in 2021 to 235 thousand tons and continued growing to a peak of 255 thousand tons in 2022. After this high point, the market entered a correction phase, contracting to 248 thousand tons in 2023 and further to 225 thousand tons in 2024.

Production then rose significantly in 2019, reaching a peak of 233.4 K t, reflecting a notable increase of 2.0%. By 2020, output had decreased slightly to 229.0 K t, showing a small decline of 1.9% year-over-year.

In 2018, Greece's exports of wheat bran, sharps and residues fell to 20 152 t, representing a sharp decline of 16.5%. The following year, exports surged to 25 831 t, the highest level recorded, with a substantial increase of 28.2%. In 2020, exports dropped modestly to 24 701 t, indicating a 4.4% decrease from 2019. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 2.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 0.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Turkey, and Cyprus remained the primary buyers of wheat bran, sharps and residues from Greece. Italy accounted for 39.8% of exports in kind, Turkey for 34.3%, and Cyprus for 13.5%. Together, these three countries formed 87.6% of total exports in kind.

In 2018, Greece's export value of wheat bran, sharps and residues declined to 3 296 K $ US, a decrease of 6.5%. The following year, exports rebounded strongly, reaching 4 180 K $ US with a significant increase of 26.8%. In 2020, the export value remained broadly stable at 4 180 K $ US compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 18.6%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 5.9%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Italy, Turkey, and Cyprus played leading roles in the value terms of wheat bran, sharps and residues exports from Greece. Italy contributed 39.9% of exports in value, Turkey 34.7%, and Cyprus 14.5%. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 89.1% of total export flows.

In 2020, imports continued to rise, reaching 10 975 t, which represented a gain of 23.9% compared to 2019. This marked the second consecutive year of growth. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 20.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Bulgaria and North Macedonia clearly dominated Greece's imports of wheat bran, sharps and residues in kind. Together, they accounted for 88.6% of total import flows, while other countries held much smaller shares.

In 2018, Greece's import value of wheat bran, sharps and residues declined to 1 069 K $ US, a decrease of 28.1%. The following year, imports rebounded strongly, increasing by 47.4%. In 2020, imports continued to grow, reaching 1 947 K $ US, which amounted to a strong rise of 23.5% relative to the prior year. This represented the second consecutive year of increase. Over the period 2017-2020, imports increased by 30.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.4%.

In 2017–2020, two markets—Bulgaria and North Macedonia—played the leading roles in imports in value terms of wheat bran, sharps and residues to Greece. Together, they accounted for 83.7% of total import flows, while the remainder was distributed among other destinations.
