The ASEAN market for wheat bran, sharps and residues saw its volume grow consistently from 2018 to 2021, increasing from about 4.5 million tons to over 5.1 million tons. This growth phase was followed by a sharp contraction in 2022, when the market size fell to 4.3 million tons, before partially recovering to 4.5 million tons in 2023.

In value terms, the market expanded more robustly, rising from $826 million in 2018 to a peak of $1,198 million in 2021. The market value demonstrated resilience in 2022, dipping only slightly to $1,177 million despite the notable drop in volume, indicating higher unit prices. Domestic production mirrored this trend, climbing from 4.2 million tons in 2018 to 5.1 million tons in 2021 before declining and then stabilizing in the following years.

ASEAN's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 4 900 K t, marking an 11.8% rise compared to 2019. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 4 174 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 13.9%.

ASEAN's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 956.8 M $ US, showing a strong increase of 17.5% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 23.6%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.3%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 762.9 M $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 1.4%.

Exports wheat bran, sharps and residues from ASEAN

After two years of decline, ASEAN's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues have rebounded. In 2020, the region exported 718.9 K t, a sharp increase of 38.5% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 26.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 8.1%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 519.1 K t, which saw the largest decline of 8.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, ASEAN's wheat bran, sharps, and residues were exported to a diverse range of markets. Even the top destinations—China, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia—together accounted for only 38.2% of total exports in volume.

In 2020, ASEAN's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues reached 140.4 M $ US, a sharp rise of 45.7% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 54.4%, with an annualized rate of 15.6%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 7.0%.

The export market in value terms was broad from 2017 to 2020. China (22.2% of exports), South Korea (10.3%), and Saudi Arabia (6.2%) together made up just 38.7% of total flows, with the remaining 61.3% distributed among many other countries.

Imports wheat bran, sharps and residues to ASEAN

ASEAN imported 839.7 K t of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in 2020, a 9.5% year-on-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 41.9%, with a CAGR of 12.4%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 888.5 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 50.2%. The largest decline was in 2019 at 13.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, ASEAN's imports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in volume terms came from a wide array of partner countries. Sri Lanka (9.4% of imports), Japan (8.9%), and Asia, not elsewhere specified (8.2%) together accounted for only 26.5% of total flows.

After two years of growth, ASEAN's imports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues declined. In 2020, imports stood at 180.9 M $ US, a 2.7% drop from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 8.7%, with a CAGR of 2.8%. The highest value was in 2019 at 186.0 M $ US, which also experienced the largest increase of 11.2%.
