The ASEAN rapeseed oilcake market volume fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 801 thousand tons and reaching 1 051 thousand tons in the final year. A sharp contraction occurred in 2020 when the market fell to 604 thousand tons, interrupting the earlier stability.

Market recovery and subsequent expansion from 2021 onward were driven by rising demand for high-protein animal feed, as increasing meat and dairy consumption in the Asia-Pacific region lifted requirements for rapeseed meal. At the same time, global oilseed crushing activity accelerated, boosting the production of oil-cake residues and enhancing supply to the ASEAN market.

Domestic production remained modest, ranging from 19 to 34 thousand tons, indicating that import flows supplied most of the market growth. Imports surged to over 1 million tons in 2023 and remained high at 781 thousand tons in 2024, reflecting sustained international trade in rapeseed oilcake.

Following two consecutive years of decline, rapeseed oilcake production in ASEAN rebounded. In 2020, production reached 26 500 tonnes, marking a significant year-over-year increase of 41.0%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 25%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 7.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 18 800 tonnes, with the largest decline occurring that same year at 10.5%.

After two years of decline, ASEAN's rapeseed oilcake export volume increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 5.6 thousand tonnes, showing a solid rise of 11.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 21.3%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 7.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 5.1 thousand tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 24.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Japan, South Korea, and Asia (not elsewhere specified) formed the core of ASEAN's rapeseed oilcake exports in volume terms. Japan accounted for 15.1% of exports, South Korea for 8.1%, and Asia (not elsewhere specified) for 0.6%, together representing 23.8% of total export flows.

ASEAN's rapeseed oilcake exports in value terms reached 1.5 million US dollars in 2020, reflecting a 15.7% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 9.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -3.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1.3 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2018 at 2.3 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 42.8%, and the largest increase was in 2018 at 37.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan and South Korea were the leading destinations for ASEAN's rapeseed oilcake exports in value terms, jointly accounting for 19.8% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, rapeseed oilcake deliveries to ASEAN declined. In 2020, imports totaled 157.2 million US dollars, showing a sharp decline of 28.9% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 13.4%, equating to an annualized decline of 4.7%. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 221.0 million US dollars, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 21.1%.
