Earlier Report Observations
The market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Armenia expanded from 61 148 tons in 2018 to a peak of 71 526 tons in 2020. Production followed a similar trajectory, rising sharply in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, prompting increased domestic output while imports fell.
After 2020, production declined due to grain market volatility, including panic and price spikes following Russia's temporary ban on grain exports to EAEU countries, which constrained raw material availability. The market volume stabilized in 2022 before recovering in 2023, aided by continued government subsidies for winter wheat sowing that boosted domestic grain supply for bran production.
Armenia's dependence on imported wheat and derived products influenced trade throughout the period, with bran imports peaking in 2019 and rising again from 2022. The 2022 memorandum to develop the agro-industrial complex signaled broader sector investment, while increased Russian exports of wheat bran affected import flows in subsequent years.
