Earlier Report Observations

Wheat production in India increased from 326.3 million tonnes in 2018 to 355.5 million tonnes in 2023. This growth was supported by the adoption of high-yielding genotypes, expanded irrigation, and favorable growing conditions, with research systems releasing numerous varieties suited to different agro-ecological zones, including fortified options for improved nutrition.

The total wheat market volume expanded from 387.7 million tonnes to 453.7 million tonnes between 2018 and 2023, aided by rising imports which reached 105.9 million tonnes in 2023. Government interventions, including Minimum Support Price mechanisms, buffer stock management, and Public Distribution System sales, played a key role in stabilizing domestic supply and influencing price trends.

In 2024, wheat flour exports surged by 425% year-over-year in February, reflecting increased processing activity, while wholesale price volatility indicated adjustments in market arrivals. Ongoing research continued to introduce new varieties with improved disease resistance and nutritional quality, supporting long-term production resilience.
