The watermelon market in Tunisia showed notable volatility from 2018 to 2023. After a decline from 520.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 444.2 thousand tonnes in 2020, the market rebounded sharply to 518.5 thousand tonnes in 2021. This recovery was fueled by identified export opportunities for Tunisian watermelons to target markets including Russia, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, which stimulated domestic production.

Market volume then fell to 431.7 thousand tonnes in 2022 amid lower production and increased exports, a year in which Tunisia ranked fourth among Arab watermelon exporters by revenue. A partial recovery followed in 2023, with the market reaching 457.8 thousand tonnes. By 2024, new investors had entered the sector, expanding cultivation into new areas and raising watermelon volumes by 20% compared to the prior season, although overall vegetable crop area continued a long-term decline due to climate pressures, water scarcity, and higher production costs.
