However, in 2020, volume dropped to 6.4 thousand tons due to economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected import flows and overall consumption. During this period, local companies such as Syarikat Kosi showed support for domestic agriculture by purchasing produce from growers like Superfish Growers, aiming to bolster the local sector amid the crisis.

Following the pandemic dip, the market recovered strongly, reaching 7.0 thousand tons in 2021 and then surging to 10.7 thousand tons in 2022. By 2023, volumes had grown further to 12.2 thousand tons, more than doubling compared to the 2020 low. This sustained expansion reflected increased imports and a rising overall appetite for watermelons in the country.
