The walnut market in Northern Africa expanded significantly from 2018 to 2023, with total volume rising from 50 803 tons to 80 660 tons, an increase of nearly 59%. Growth was particularly strong in 2021, when the market surged by 28% to reach 79 943 tons, marking the highest point in the period. This upward trajectory was supported by a consistent and substantial rise in imports, which more than tripled over these years.

Following the 2021 peak, market volume dipped by 8% in 2022 to 73 651 tons before recovering to 80 660 tons in 2023. Domestic production proved volatile, spiking to 48 630 tons in 2021 but falling back to 33 455 tons by the end of the period. The ongoing growth in imports, which reached 47 217 tons in 2023, underscored the region's increasing dependence on foreign supplies to sustain market volume.

After a two-year decline, walnut production in Northern Africa rebounded. In 2020, the region produced 35 631 tonnes of walnuts, representing a modest increase of 6.1% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 2.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 33 598 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 7.3%.
