The ASEAN vanilla market volume experienced significant swings between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 1 818 t in 2018, consumption dropped sharply by over 30% to 1 270 t in 2019 and stabilized near 1 258 t in 2020. A strong recovery followed in 2021, with the market surging 46% to reach 1 833 t, close to the initial level.

The rebound proved temporary, as market volume fell again by 24% to 1 391 t in 2022 before edging up 3% to 1 435 t in 2023. Domestic production followed a similar volatile pattern, declining from 1 872 t in 2018 to a low of 1 412 t in 2020, then peaking at 1 957 t in 2021.

Vanilla production in ASEAN has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 1 412 tonnes of vanilla, marking a 3.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 29%, which translates to an average annual decline of 10.8%.

ASEAN's vanilla production has decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 170.2 million US dollars, down by 28.3% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production dropped by 59.1%, with an average annual decline of 25.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 416.9 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 43.1%. The smallest increase was seen in 2018 at 0.2%.

Exports vanilla from ASEAN

Exports in kind, t

Vanilla exports from ASEAN have increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region exported 508.2 tonnes of vanilla, showing a strong year-over-year growth of 16.3%. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 15.1%, with an average annual increase of 4.8%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 345.0 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 21.9%. The biggest increase was recorded in 2019 at 26.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the main markets for ASEAN's vanilla exports in volume terms were the United States, accounting for 41.9% of exports, Bangladesh at 6.6%, and India at 6.0%. Together, these three countries made up 54.6% of total export flows.
