Earlier Report Observations

The Mexican vanilla market volume expanded from 495 t in 2018 to 589 t in 2020, primarily fueled by strong international demand from key markets like the United States, France, and Germany. This export-driven growth occurred despite persistent structural challenges within the sector, including low technological adoption, limited organization among small-scale producers, and unstable market conditions.

After reaching its peak, the market contracted to 515 t in 2022 and further to 506 t in 2023. This decline was influenced by phytosanitary threats such as fungal diseases and drought, which impacted crop yields. Additionally, competition from significantly cheaper synthetic vanilla products, which are up to 15 times less expensive, reduced the profitability and incentive for natural vanilla production. Ongoing limitations in access to financing, technical assistance, and infrastructure further constrained recovery.

In response, institutions like the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP) focused on conserving genetic resources and developing hybrid varieties with improved disease resistance. Forecasting models were also implemented to aid production planning. However, these measures could not fully offset the compounded negative pressures on market volume in the short term.
