Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the market volume for unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Togo expanded consistently from 13 590 t to 20 228 t. This growth was driven by government-led initiatives to boost local consumption and production, starting with the 'Top Produits du Terroir' program that promoted processed coffee, followed by the launch of coffee-tasting kiosks in 2019 and the distribution of thousands of coffee seedlings in 2021. The 2020 marketing campaign under the 'Made in Togo' label, integrated into the national development plan, further supported market expansion by improving price differentials and emphasizing quality.

After peaking in 2021, the market stabilized at 19 992 t in 2022 as the newly established Coffee and Cocoa Sectors Coordination Committee (CCFCC) worked to align producer prices with global markets, though increased exports limited domestic availability. A sharp contraction to 16 145 t occurred in 2023, primarily due to climate-related challenges such as vegetation fires and aging orchards that reduced production, while concurrent efforts to enhance traceability and combat fraudulent exports also influenced market flows.

In 2024, authorities introduced additional measures including secure fiscal marking for products and the adoption of regional agri-food standards, aiming to strengthen traceability and comply with international sustainability requirements.
