Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Eastern Asia increased from 624 thousand tons in 2018 to 749 thousand tons in 2023, with a peak of 755 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was primarily fueled by a surge in imports, as domestic production remained stable around 108-120 thousand tons. The rising demand is reflected in China's jump from 17th to 7th place in global coffee imports and per capita consumption growing from 9 cups in 2016 to 16.74 cups in 2023.

Market expansion was supported by the rapid development of specialty coffee in Yunnan province, where the specialty coffee ratio rose from 8% in 2021 to 31.6% by 2024, and deep-processing rates increased from 20% to 80%. Major companies like Nestlé and Starbucks launched product lines featuring Yunnan coffee, while new players such as Buencafé expanded into western regions. Investments in large-scale storage and distribution centers, like the one in Kunshan which saw a 206.5% year-on-year growth in coffee bean imports in early 2023, enhanced supply chain efficiency.

Coffee shop proliferation, led by Shanghai with over 9,500 outlets by end-2023, and integrated logistics networks like Mixue Bingcheng's cold-chain system enabled 12-hour delivery to 90% of counties. This infrastructure drove a 97% surge in coffee delivery orders in county-level areas and a 159% increase in coffee shops, facilitating market penetration into smaller cities and shifting consumer preferences towards premiumization.
