Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for unmanufactured tobacco in the Caribbean showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023, moving between 61 939 t and 73 278 t. After a decline to 61 939 t in 2019, the market rebounded strongly to over 73 000 t in both 2020 and 2022, but contracted again in 2021 and 2023, finishing the period at 67 843 t.

This fluctuation was influenced by opposing trends in domestic production and imports. Local production fell consistently from 41 351 t in 2018 to 27 286 t in 2023. Imports generally increased to compensate, peaking at 55 296 t in 2022, which supported the larger market volumes in peak years, while exports varied and contributed to annual changes in available supply.

In 2024, trade flows shifted as imports decreased to 33 154 t and exports rose to 12 653 t. Market analysis points to growing demand within Latin America and the Caribbean as a fundamental driver, particularly for major product types like stemmed tobacco, which dominates regional import volumes.
