The market for unbleached kraft pulp in ECOWAS showed considerable volume fluctuations from 2018 to 2023, driven entirely by changes in import levels while domestic production remained unchanged. After an initial decline in 2019, market size grew steadily for three consecutive years, reaching a peak of over 27 000 t in 2022, before contracting sharply in 2023.

Import volumes more than doubled from 2019 to 2022, rising from 6 352 t to 13 416 t, which fueled the market expansion during that period. The subsequent halving of imports to 6 205 t in 2023 directly led to the market's contraction, pulling the total volume down to just over 20 000 t.

Local production was stable at 14 000 t annually throughout the period, indicating no capacity changes from regional mills. Export activity was negligible, with only a single shipment of 856 t recorded in 2019, leaving imports as the sole variable affecting total market supply.
