The alcoholic beer market in ECOWAS expanded steadily from 2018 to 2022, with volume growing from 2 982 million liters to 3 421 million liters. This 15% increase was supported by a rise in domestic production from 2 915 million liters to 3 298 million liters and a near doubling of imports, which climbed from 83 million liters to 150 million liters over the period.

After several years of growth, the market stabilized in 2023 at 3 354 million liters, a 2% decrease from the 2022 peak. This adjustment coincided with a slight dip in production to 3 242 million liters and a reduction in imports to 137 million liters, while exports held steady at 26 million liters.

ECOWAS has seen alcoholic beer production rise for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 3 142 million liters of alcoholic beer, marking a 7.7% year-on-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 11.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.6%.

ECOWAS has recorded a second consecutive year of growth in alcoholic beer production value. In 2020, the output was valued at 2 630 million US dollars, showing a significant 10.1% improvement over the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 4.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.6%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 2 357 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 6.1%.

Exports alcoholic beer from ECOWAS

Alcoholic beer exports from ECOWAS have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 22.5 million liters, up 20.7% year-on-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 19.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.2%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 15.4 million liters, which experienced the largest decline of 17.8%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 20.8% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom, Cameroon, and South Africa formed the core of ECOWAS's alcoholic beer exports in volume terms. The United Kingdom accounted for 20.6% of exports, Cameroon for 8.7%, and South Africa for 0.5%, together representing 29.9% of total export flows.

ECOWAS has experienced a second consecutive year of growth in alcoholic beer export value. In 2020, exports stood at 18 830 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant 23.4% advance compared to 2019. Over the period 2017-2020, export value increased by 12.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 12 473 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 25.2%.

Throughout 2017-2020, the United Kingdom, Cameroon, and South Africa remained the key partners for ECOWAS's alcoholic beer exports in value terms. The United Kingdom accounted for 18.1% of exports, Cameroon for 9.9%, and South Africa for 0.6%, together making up 28.6% of total export flows.

Imports alcoholic beer to ECOWAS

Alcoholic beer imports into ECOWAS have risen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 117.7 million liters, which is 17.2% higher than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 55.2%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 15.8%.

Over 2017-2020, there was no single dominant market for alcoholic beer imports into ECOWAS. The Netherlands accounted for 19.6% of imports in volume, Denmark for 14.6%, and Portugal for 13.9%, together taking 48.0% of total imports. Many smaller partners each held modest individual shares.
