Earlier Report Observations

The South American turkey meat market volume grew from 245 thousand tons in 2018 to 253 thousand tons in 2019. This increase was supported by rising tourism across the region, which lifted demand for chilled meat in food service outlets such as hotels and restaurants. At the same time, consumers in key markets like Brazil and Argentina showed a stronger preference for fresh, preservative-free meat, favoring chilled and frozen turkey products.

After 2019, market volume dropped to 214 thousand tons in 2020, then gradually recovered to 263 thousand tons by 2022.

In 2023, the market contracted sharply to 183 thousand tons. This decline coincided with new export approvals for Brazilian poultry plants to ship turkey meat to Peru, which increased outward shipments and reduced domestic availability. By 2024, further export authorizations to Peru, alongside challenges in the Brazilian turkey sector such as falling prices and the expansion of e-commerce, continued to influence trade patterns.
