This decline was most pronounced in 2020 when market volume dropped by 9%, coinciding with a sharp 23% reduction in imports. The market's value followed a different path, initially falling in 2020 but recovering steadily afterward to nearly match its 2018 level by 2023, suggesting a shift toward higher-value products or changed price structures.

Domestic production showed resilience, increasing from 5.2 thousand tons to 5.8 thousand tons over the period, supported by longstanding local producers and investments co-financed by the state and EU. The growing consumer preference for quality, locally produced, and organic meat, reinforced by the 'izbrana kakovost – Slovenija' quality label for poultry, helped bolster demand for domestic output. Meanwhile, imports nearly halved, and exports grew consistently, reflecting a strategic repositioning of the Slovenian turkey sector toward more self-sufficiency and external sales.

The market evolution was further shaped by the presence of established family businesses and the development of an organic turkey meat segment. Overall, the period was marked by a clear industry consolidation around local supply, even as total consumption volumes decreased.
