The Slovenian pork market contracted consistently from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling from 75 547 tonnes to 62 263 tonnes. This decline was accompanied by a sharp drop in domestic production, which decreased by over 8 000 tonnes over the six-year period.

Imports of pork, which account for the majority of supply, also trended downward after 2018, hitting a low of 39 175 tonnes in 2022 before partially recovering. Exports remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 3 000 and 4 600 tonnes annually without altering the overall market trajectory.

In 2020, Slovenia produced 29 000 tons of pork, representing a 10.1% decline compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 7.9%, with an average annual decline of 2.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 32 000 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.9%.

Exports pork from Slovenia

Exports in kind, t

Following two consecutive years of growth, Slovenia's pork exports declined in 2020. The country exported 3 131 tons of pork that year, marking a 29.1% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 26.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.1%. The peak export volume was reached in 2019 at 4 418 tons, while the strongest growth occurred in 2018 with a 57.0% increase.

Between 2017 and 2020, Croatia, Italy, and Serbia consistently served as Slovenia's primary pork export destinations. Croatia accounted for 33.4% of exports, Italy for 13.7%, and Serbia for 13.4%. Together, these three countries represented 60.6% of Slovenia's total pork exports during this period.

Exports in value, M $ US

After two years of expansion, Slovenia's pork export value declined in 2020. Export revenues reached $10.9 million that year, representing a 24.7% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 35.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.6%. The highest export value was recorded in 2019 at $14.5 million, while the most significant growth occurred in 2018 with a 54.5% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, Croatia, Italy, and Serbia formed the core markets for Slovenia's pork exports by value. Croatia accounted for 34.0% of export value, Italy for 20.7%, and Serbia for 10.9%. Collectively, these three destinations represented 65.6% of Slovenia's total pork export value during this four-year period.

Imports pork to Slovenia

Slovenia's pork imports declined for the second consecutive year in 2020. Import volume reached 39 903 tons, showing a substantial 10.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 15.3%, with an average annual decline of 5.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 48 151 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.2%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Austria, Germany, and Spain were Slovenia's three main sources of pork imports by volume. Together, these countries supplied 62.3% of all pork imported into Slovenia.

Slovenia imported $125.6 million worth of pork in 2020, reflecting a significant 12.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 9.0%, with an average annual decline of 3.1%. The peak import value was recorded in 2019 at $135.6 million, which also saw the largest annual increase of 4.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Austria, Germany, and Spain were the leading sources of pork imports by value for Slovenia. Austria accounted for 33.0% of import value, Germany for 16.6%, and Spain for 14.6%.
