The Slovenian market for salted, brined, dried or smoked pork grew consistently from 6 100 t in 2018 to a peak of 8 410 t in 2022. This expansion was driven by a structural reliance on imports due to insufficient domestic supply of pork, with import volumes rising from 2 183 t to 3 981 t over the period to meet demand.

A sharp 11% contraction to 7 480 t occurred in 2023, primarily caused by a significant drop in domestic production. While imports remained at record levels to compensate for the shortfall in local supply, the overall market volume declined. A competition authority investigation into food pricing and supplier relationships in 2022 had previously highlighted pressures within the supply chain.

By 2024, the market stabilized at 7 277 t. New online retailers reshaped distribution channels, while consumer preferences increasingly shifted towards locally produced, traditional meat products and plant-based alternatives, influencing the market's evolving structure.

In 2020, output was valued at 40 243 thousand US dollars, marking a 4.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 13.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 42 227 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 19.0%.

Following a two-year increase, Slovenia's production of salted, brined, dried, or smoked pork declined. In 2020, 4 757 tonnes were produced, representing a 13.3% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, overall production decreased by 2.6%, equating to an average annual decline of 0.9%. The peak was in 2019 with 5 486 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 7.6%.

Exports of salted, brined, dried, or smoked pork from Slovenia declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export volume totaled 678 tonnes, showing a sharp decline of 25.2% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 45.5%, with an average annual decline of 18.3%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 338 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 7.6%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 32.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Croatia, Italy, and Serbia formed the core of Slovenia's exports in kind. Croatia accounted for 52.0% of exports, Italy for 17.6%, and Serbia for 17.3%, together representing 87.0% of total export flows.
