The triticale market in Western Europe expanded from 3.9 million tonnes in 2018 to 4.5 million tonnes in 2019, a growth supported by increasing market demand reflected in rising export values in France. The crop's better tolerance to drier spring and early summer conditions compared to other cereals also provided resilience for farmers adapting to extreme weather. After a contraction to 4.1 million tonnes in 2020, the market recovered to 4.4 million tonnes in 2021, sustained by triticale's valued use in animal feed for its digestibility and by ongoing breeding work focused on improving disease resistance and yield stability.

Market volume eased to 4.2 million tonnes in 2022 before reaching 4.2 million tonnes again in 2023, a year marked by record production of about 1.8 million tonnes in France. This performance was aided by the registration of eight new triticale varieties and a 7.6% yield improvement. Throughout the period, the market's value demonstrated consistent growth from $1.2 billion in 2018 to $1.5 billion in 2023, driven by significant price increases from around $0.20 per kg in 2019 to over $0.30 per kg in subsequent years, underpinned by continuous variety development and testing efforts.
