Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the Italian triticale market showed notable fluctuations. Market volume dipped to 86 250 t in 2019 before surging to over 114 000 t in 2020, then contracting again the following year. Domestic production followed a similar pattern, declining slightly before recovering to 63 730 t in 2021.

The market landscape began to see regulatory developments from 2022. The Italian Ministry of Agricultural Policies approved funding for innovative projects targeting food waste reduction, shelf life, and packaging, while new EU-wide traceability and labeling rules came into effect. The following year brought modifications to organic certification and labeling requirements, alongside an extension of the experimental country-of-origin labeling scheme for certain food products. During this period, domestic triticale production saw a significant increase, reaching 76 290 t in 2023.

Entering 2024, the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023-2027 introduced mandatory crop rotation rules, prohibiting successive cultivation of crops from the same botanical genus, such as wheat and triticale. Updated integrated production protocols for triticale in regions like Campania provided specific cultivation guidelines. Concurrently, consumer preference trends continued to shift towards sustainability and transparency in labeling.
