Earlier Report Observations

Triticale production in Denmark began the period at 37 160 t in 2018, constrained by a severe drought that reduced cereal harvests by 40%. Output rebounded sharply to 51 100 t in 2019 as agricultural productivity efforts, including yield improvements for feed crops, took effect. The subsequent decline to 41 410 t in 2020 coincided with the introduction of the National Climate Law and the Green Tripartite Agreement, which imposed new CO2 taxes and stricter nitrogen regulations on the agricultural sector.

Production recovered to 49 020 t in 2021, supported by a growing focus on organic systems and innovative plant breeding aimed at sustainable yield increases. However, output fell to 33 410 t in 2022 following the implementation of new EU-derived fertiliser registration rules in Denmark, which altered market access for agricultural inputs. The downward trend continued in 2023, with production reaching 27 380 t, reflecting a broader, long-term reduction in the area cultivated for grain, which shrunk by 13% from 2018 to 2025.

The latter part of the period saw policy developments shaping the operating environment, including the landmark agreement on a world-first tax on agricultural emissions from 2035 and proposed new regulations for food contact materials. Concurrently, initiatives to promote whole grain consumption and a shift towards plant-based diets gained traction, while triticale imports rose significantly to 25 246 t in 2024.
