Earlier Report Observations

The volume of the maize market in Denmark displayed considerable fluctuation from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 423.8 thousand tonnes in 2018, it declined to 397.5 thousand tonnes the following year before contracting sharply to 177.2 thousand tonnes in 2020. A modest recovery to 189.1 thousand tonnes occurred in 2021, followed by a more substantial rebound to 291.6 thousand tonnes in 2022. The market then contracted again to 218.2 thousand tonnes in 2023.

These movements were primarily shaped by changes in import volumes, which constitute the largest component of market supply. Imports fell dramatically from over 435 thousand tonnes in 2018-2019 to 172.3 thousand tonnes in 2020 and 147.4 thousand tonnes in 2021, before rising to 238.0 thousand tonnes in 2022. Domestic production, while much smaller, showed growth from 35.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 60.7 thousand tonnes in 2022, contributing to the market recovery that year. Export volumes were generally low after a spike in 2019, having minimal impact on overall market size.

For the later years of the period, import trends continued with a gradual decline from 181.7 thousand tonnes in 2023 to 157.5 thousand tonnes in 2025, while exports remained negligible. The available data indicates a market that remained below its pre-2020 levels after the initial shock, with supply dynamics continuing to adjust.
