Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Spanish shelled almonds market volume showed volatile movements. Strong international demand from the United States, China, and India in 2018–2019 boosted export activity, temporarily reducing domestic availability. By 2020, increased production, driven by the expansion of irrigated acreage and the adoption of frost‑resistant varieties, coupled with growing European demand, helped lift the market volume to 125.6 thousand tonnes.

From 2021 onward, repeated spring frosts and droughts in Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla‑La Mancha, and Valencia caused a significant drop in harvests. This led to a contraction in market volume in 2021 and 2022, exacerbated by a global supply shortfall. A turnaround came in 2023 when the ‘Sustainable EU Almond’ promotional campaign raised consumer awareness of health benefits, spurring a 32.6% rise in domestic consumption. At the same time, a partial production recovery, supported by further growth in irrigated area, allowed the market volume to rebound to 101.4 thousand tonnes.
