Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2021, the treenuts market in Belarus expanded, reaching 25 519 metric tons in 2021. This growth was supported by a 22% increase in walnut sales across the CIS region between 2017 and 2021, which boosted demand for nuts in Belarus through regional trade. Imports rose significantly during this period, supplying the growing market. Concurrently, Belarus launched experimental nut groves in Minsk, Grodno, and Brest regions, acclimatizing seedlings of walnuts and hazelnuts for future industrial cultivation.
After 2021, the market contracted sharply, falling to 14 546 metric tons by 2023. Sanctions and external economic factors from 2022 onward disrupted trade, leading to a 65% drop in imports that year. High competition on the nut market, with a consumer shift toward economy and mid‑range packaged products, further pressured the market structure. Although specific legislative changes in Belarus were not recorded, these external shocks significantly reduced overall market volume.
Domestic production initiatives continued throughout the period, with experimental groves developing since 2018 and the first hazelnut harvest expected around 2023‑2024. In 2024, Russia’s introduction of an export duty on pine nuts from August 1 may indirectly affect Belarus’ nut trade within the EAEU. State and private efforts to expand hazelnut and walnut cultivation aim to reduce import dependency over time.
